Profile

Hi, I’m Joy Liu.
I am a user experience leader and design mentor.

From start-ups to big enterprise-scale companies, I empower cross-functional teams to collaborate and build great product narratives together, turning organizational chaos into launch-able roadmaps and great user experiences.

Outside of work, I offer pro-bono mentorship to designers navigating the design and tech industries, and I stay involved in the broader design and tech community through volunteer talks and events.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband James and our cats: Duke, Toto, Yarmi, and Joey.

My Approach & Process

Building a product is a team sport.
This process only works because I bring others into it at every stage.

Understand the landscape

We first deep-dive into the problem space, understand the domain, actors, and information that flows through the process. This starts with staying curious: getting behind the why, not just the what, so alignment comes naturally. This is where collaboration with field and research teams are key.

Articulate the ecosystem

Once we are clear, we can get started with ideation and sketch out what the ecosystem and relationships look like. This is essential to identify seams and break down silos for an end-to-end journey, which means naming the hard questions before they surface as bigger problems downstream.

Create and deliver

We can get into the details once we’re clear on problem worth solving, ideal vision, and aligned journey. This is where co-creation with engineers is valuable so we can determine feasibility and trade-offs to get to a shippable scope. And based on that, create a logical go-to-market strategy backed by a story that builds the empathy needed for real buy-in.

Fostering communities

community

I find great joy in giving back to the community. In the early 2010s, I began volunteering and attending meet-ups, producing speaker events with AIGA for 100+ attendees and volunteering as an event moderator for Balanced Team and General Assembly, exploring better UX methodologies and spreading awareness.

During the 2020 pandemic, I joined online design communities to mentor recent graduates and career-changers entering the UX field, offering my services pro bono because I believe in supporting those seeking opportunities.

Alongside supporting the design community, I am passionate about breaking the bamboo ceiling for Asian-Americans and women. As an alumna of the Mount Jade West mentorship program, I recently helped produce the 2024 Women’s Leadership Summit, empowering Asian-American women in their professional growth.

Bringing industry knowledge into classroom

teaching

I enjoy being a part-time instructor, bringing real-world industry experience into the classroom. When I entered the digital product design field, formal programs were rare, and my peers all transitioned from diverse, non-UX backgrounds. With technology evolving rapidly, I’m passionate about bridging that gap, preparing students to tackle real-world design challenges with strong storytelling and persuasive design rationale.

Courses taught:

  • Advanced Interaction Design
  • Intro to Interaction Design
  • Prototyping
  • Systems Thinking
  • Sponsored Studio: Lenovo Collaboration

Kind words from peers

Joy’s outstanding work on [redacted] has been a big contributor to the success of the project. She has been highly effective in her timely delivery on a variety of challenges, and also extremely responsive whenever questions arose during implementation. I have learned to de-risk my forecasts when I hear Joy will be involved in one of my projects; I can count on her to execute on high-quality designs up front and to minimize the kinds of last-minute UX changes that can really mess up an engineering schedule.

— Engineer Lead

I’m consistently impressed with how Joy spots opportunity for improvement— whether it be in a design or in a process—and doesn’t hesitate to take initiative to execute actionable progress to address them. For example, Joy independently plans series of research studies to stress-test [feature], led cross-office brainstorms with multiple designers to create a scalable framework, and led discussions amongst designers to create joint UX-timelines (to aid visibility and opportunities for collaboration).

— Designer

Joy moves quickly and is able to make decisions while also being open to discussion and feedback for quick iteration. I really value her approach to build a quick mock and then iterate over it, because that proves to be very helpful for the broader team. She is also very aware of how other design decisions across the larger team and [platform] may impact what she is working on for [feature] (and vice-versa) and she is great about sharing that information with the [feature] team. I feel very fortunate to work closely with Joy on the effort.

— Product Manager

Joy is an amazingly talented designer, thinker, and team leader! Throughout our 3+ years working together, Joy always brought forth extremely thoughtful and detailed UI/UX design solutions for the project engagements we worked on together. She always strives to lead by example, being extremely organized in her thinking and calculated in her strategy, when presenting to senior leaders and stakeholders. As a design team lead for some of ServiceNow's most ambitious design initiatives, it was such a pleasure working with her!

— Agency Partner

I enjoyed talking with Joy. She is friendly and is easy to talk to. She gave me constructive feedback on my portfolio and other advice on career transition. She suggested me to use mind mapping to find my pitch and to discover how to translate my prior experience to the new roles. I appreciate that she took the time and made sure to answer all my questions. The meeting was helpful to take an objective look at my experience and it gave me the inspiration to keep moving forward.

— Mentee, UX Designer

...Joy extends her passion for UX into the classroom environment to accelerate her students abilities into that of professional design leaders, by driving them to evolve beyond their own expectations. Joy’s curriculum prepared me to create human-centered design solutions to complex problems by helping me to grow as a systems thinker, and user experience practitioner... Joy’s course will undoubtedly remain among my most highly valued learning experiences at Art Center!
